Do you have an adult coloring book?
Although the trend evolved most recently with Scottish freelancer Johanna Basford in 2011 with “Secret Garden” a complex and hand-drawn book, it has grown internationally! From China to Brazil, and now the United States, adult coloring books have the reputation for relieving stress and reducing anxiety.
Each of the top 5 publishing houses are launching new coloring books for adults and Amazon now has a category dedicated to Colorists. Some adult coloring books are based on beloved TV Shows like “Game of Thrones“, others are silly and whimsical. Adults who color, or “Colorists,” can upload their creations to online galleries or share them on Facebook and Pinterest.
Some critics view the trend as a cultural Peter Pan syndrome, and others believe it is nostalgia. Avid Colorists view their coloring as therapeutic, relaxing similar to yoga and meditation – Doctors are prescribing it to calm anxiety and stimulate your creative mind. And some Colorists are just keeping their hands busy, “Coloring is something to do with my hands while I watch Netflix,” Julie Beck wrote in the Atlantic.
Regardless of what we call the trend, there is no doubt it will be here for a few years. Interested in learning how to color? These 13 tips from Coloring Book Addict are very helpful!
